Welcome & Intro

Welcome to my blog!
I will be discussing a variety of topics related to government regulation of the Internet over the next few weeks. For an introduction to the topic I will give a quick description of why some people support the government controlling the Internet and why others are against the government controlling the Internet.

According to this article by The Wall Street Journal, the government should regulate broadband Internet because it is a utility. The Internet is now an essential part of business, news, and everyday lives. Because of many reasons, including a high barrier to market entry, Broadband companies have little competition and are able to increase prices. Broadband companies are also able to speed up loading and for certain sites that pay them.

In contrast, according to this article by Human Events, the majority of Americans do not want the Internet regulated by the government.  American Commitment, a conservative advocacy organization, is concerned that turning the Internet into a "public utility" would drastically affect the Internet as we know it. They gathered over 772,000 American signatures on a petition because they believe more government control is not conducive to free speech and innovation.
